What is Kaspa?

Bitcoin proved that Proof-of-Work creates the most secure type of blockchain. But it has a speed problem: only 1 block every 10 minutes, processing ~7 transactions per second. That's too slow for everyday payments.

Most solutions to this problem (like Ethereum and Solana) abandoned Proof-of-Work entirely and switched to Proof-of-Stake. Kaspa takes a different approach: what if you could keep PoW but make it much faster?

The answer is BlockDAG. In a traditional blockchain, if two miners produce a block at the same time, one gets rejected — wasted work. In Kaspa's BlockDAG, both blocks are kept. Multiple blocks can be produced simultaneously and the protocol sorts them into a coherent order afterwards. This means you can have many miners producing blocks every second without the orphan block problem.

The result: Kaspa currently processes 10 blocks per second (targeting 100 BPS) with transaction confirmation in about 1 second. It's the fastest Proof-of-Work network in existence — by a massive margin.

How BlockDAG Works (Simply)

🔗 Traditional Blockchain (Bitcoin)

Blocks form a single chain: A → B → C → D. Only one miner can produce each block. If two miners solve a block simultaneously, one is discarded. This limits speed to one block per time interval.

Blocks form a DAG (directed acyclic graph): multiple blocks can be produced simultaneously and reference each other. The GHOSTDAG protocol orders them into a consistent timeline. No blocks are wasted — every miner's work counts.

Can Kaspa have smart contracts?
Not yet, but it's planned. KIP-9 is Kaspa's smart contract proposal that would bring programmability to the network. It's in active development as of 2025. Once live, Kaspa could host DeFi, NFTs, and other applications — currently it's a pure currency/payment chain.
Is KAS mineable on regular computers?
